Hey PA Virtual! As Pennsylvania residents faced frigid single-digit temperatures last night and early this morning. Many of us are wondering why it was so unusually cold. Sure, Pennsylvania does absolutely get those biting cold nights but getting close to 0 degrees is always a bit alarming. However, the answer lies high above in the atmospheric phenomena known as the polar vortex.

What is the Polar Vortex?

The polar vortex is a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both of the Earth’s poles. It always exists near the poles, but during winter, it expands, sending cold air southward across the United States with the jet stream. This year, the vortex has extended farther than usual.

Why is the Polar Vortex Affecting Pennsylvania Today?

The strength and position of the polar vortex significantly influence winter weather in the Northern Hemisphere. When the vortex is strong and stable, it keeps the coldest air locked up close to the North Pole. However, when the vortex weakens or splits, it causes an outbreak of cold air to move southward. This year, fluctuations in the vortex have caused significant disruptions, allowing frigid air to spill over into Pennsylvania. Many of us were rushing for shelter last night and this morning! Crazy how single digit temperatures will make you appreciate temperatures in the 20s and 30s, right?

How Long Will the Cold Last?

While the polar vortex makes headlines for bringing severe cold, especially today, it's usually a temporary phase. Meteorologists currently predict that these conditions may last for a week or two before warmer air pushes back. But as we all know, weather is temperamental, literally and figuratively.  It's important to stay updated with local weather forecasts and be prepared for rapid changes in weather conditions.

Tips for Staying Warm and Safe

Insulate Your Home: Check windows and doors for drafts and consider using insulation tape or extra blankets to keep the cold out.

Layer Up: Wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one layer of heavy clothing.

Maintain Your Heating Systems: Ensure your heating system is up to date and functioning efficiently. Schedule maintenance checks and replace filters regularly.

Be Mindful of Outdoor Activities: Limit exposure to the cold and make sure to dress appropriately if you need to go outside.

Stay Safe and Stay Warm

Understanding the polar vortex and its impacts can help us better prepare for cold spells. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, we can ensure that the winter months pass by safely and comfortably for our families. When the weather warms up a bit, head out there and enjoy the snow. Build a snowman, have a snowball fight, ride some sleds, and enjoy time with the family.

But for now stay warm and stay safe!
