For PA Virtual Charter School Class of 2025 graduate Haley, the journey to graduation has been about much more than earning a diploma. Over the past several years, she has discovered confidence, embraced leadership opportunities, and built meaningful connections that helped shape her future.

Discovering a Statewide Community

Haley joined PA Virtual during 10th grade after already spending time learning online. While she appreciated the flexibility of virtual education, she quickly found that PA Virtual offered something even more valuable: a strong sense of community.

Living in a rural area, Haley was initially struck by how students from across Pennsylvania came together in her virtual classroom. One of her earliest memories was in an English Honors course, where her teacher created a map showing where students lived throughout the state.

“I was the one person off to the side,” Haley recalled. “But it was really nice to see how far everybody else was and know that it wasn’t so condensed. One of the things I didn’t like about public school was that it felt so small where I was. Having that diversity with other students was lovely.”

Stepping Into Leadership

As she became more comfortable in the PA Virtual community, Haley began stepping outside of her comfort zone. What started as joining a few clubs quickly turned into a long list of leadership positions and extracurricular involvement.

By her senior year, Haley was serving as president of the National English Honor Society, secretary of National Honor Society, vice president of Student Council, president of the Newspaper Club, and a leader in both Writers Nook and Book Club. She was also involved in additional honor societies and took on the role of student leader for prom planning.

Her involvement helped her develop skills that extended far beyond academics.

“When I was in public school, I was so afraid of interacting with other kids,” Haley said. “I came here and I finally felt comfortable for the first time.”

Through clubs and leadership opportunities, she gained confidence in public speaking, communication, and collaboration. By graduation day, standing in front of an audience to deliver a speech no longer felt intimidating.

“I’m so grateful for that,” she shared. “Being able to talk to others and not having as much social anxiety.”

The Impact of Supportive Teachers

Along the way, Haley found support from teachers who encouraged her growth and made a lasting impact on her educational experience.

She credits several educators for helping her succeed, especially her English teachers. Their encouragement, understanding, and willingness to support students helped create an environment where she felt comfortable asking questions and seeking help when needed.

“I never felt judged,” Haley explained. “Having teachers who were very supportive taught me that asking for help is okay.”

Looking Ahead to Syracuse University

Academically, Haley's hard work paid off in a big way. She was accepted through Early Decision to Syracuse University, where she plans to study in the College of Arts and Sciences. She was admitted to the creative writing program and hopes to double major in English and Textual Studies while exploring cinema and screen studies.

She is also excited about opportunities to study abroad in London and continue pursuing her passion for storytelling and writing.

A Moment of Pride

As she reflects on graduation, Haley sees it as the beginning of an exciting new chapter.

“My whole life, I’ve always pressured myself to do my best,” she said. “I’m so proud of myself. I think if the younger version of me could see me today, she would be so proud of me. And that’s all I could ever ask for.”

After years of dedication and hard work, graduation represents both an achievement and a fresh start.

Advice for Future PA Virtual Students

Looking back on her experience, Haley offers simple but meaningful advice to current and future PA Virtual students: stay organized, get involved, and don’t be afraid to reach out to others.

“If you’re afraid of going to clubs or anything like that, don’t be,” she said. “You’re going to find people that you love, people that become your best friends, and people that are so worth it.”

In fact, one of Haley’s closest friendships began through a school discussion board and grew into a lasting connection that continues today.

Her story serves as a reminder that virtual education is about more than learning online. It’s about finding opportunities, building relationships, developing confidence, and discovering what’s possible.

As Haley graduates from PA Virtual and prepares for college, she leaves behind a legacy of leadership, involvement, and carries with her the skills and confidence to succeed wherever life takes her next.
