For example, biology students at PA Virtual not only learn the basics about how enzymes function in living bodies, but by using an interactive lab called a Gizmo, they are transformed into veterinary technicians tasked with diagnosing and treating an adorable Great Dane puppy named Claire who is struggling to gain weight. Students learn about the different enzymes that help with digestion, hypothesize about Claire’s deficiency, and run diagnostic tests to determine the exact cause of her illness so they can prescribe a treatment. By linking abstract concepts to everyday life and potential future careers, STEM makes learning more engaging and meaningful and helps students understand how their education can directly impact the world around them.
STEM education doesn’t just happen through textbooks and lectures; STEM students are active participants in their learning through projects, hands-on activities, and the integration of technology. Even in virtual classrooms, there are countless ways to bring STEM to life.
In project-based learning, students work on long-term projects that require them to apply knowledge from across the curriculum in multiple STEM fields. For example, students may work on designing a solar-powered vehicle or a model city that relies on renewable energy. PA Virtual Charter School recognizes the crucial role STEM plays in educating students and offers students numerous opportunities to interact with STEM both inside and outside of the classroom. PA Virtual teachers incorporate powerful and engaging programs into their classrooms that incorporate all of the facets of STEM, including hands-on and collaborative learning. In November, we celebrate National STEM day (November 8) all month long with STEM-based experiences that include science center and museum tours, interactive learning activities, and even hayrides where students learn about the innovative science and technology behind farming. These fun and engaging outings allow PA Virtual students to socialize with their classmates and inspire them to explore their interests in STEM.
