Choosing the right school for your child is a big decision, and if you're considering online learning, you probably have plenty of questions. Whether you're wondering how virtual classes work, what your role will be as a parent, or what your child needs to succeed, you're not alone.

At PA Virtual Charter School, we understand that every family's journey is different. That's why we've answered some of the most common questions we hear from new families considering enrollment.

1. Is PA Virtual Charter School tuition-free?

Yes! PA Virtual is a public cyber charter school available to eligible Pennsylvania students in grades K–12. There is no tuition to attend, and families do not pay for curriculum or instructional materials needed for their student's education.

2. What technology is provided?

Students receive the technology they need to participate in online learning, including a school-issued laptop. Families also have access to technical support if they experience issues with school-provided devices or learning platforms.

3. How do online classes work?

Students attend live, teacher-led classes from home while also completing independent assignments throughout the week. Elementary students generally receive more hands-on support from their Learning Coach, while middle and high school students gradually become more independent as they build responsibility and time management skills.

Teachers provide instruction, answer questions, give feedback, and keep students engaged through interactive online lessons.

4. What is a Learning Coach?

One of the unique aspects of PA Virtual is the Diamond Model of Partnership. A Learning Coach—typically a parent or guardian, plays an active role in supporting their child's education by helping establish routines, monitoring progress, encouraging participation, and communicating with teachers when needed.

The amount of daily support varies depending on a student's age and level of independence.

5. Will my child interact with teachers and classmates?

Absolutely! Students regularly participate in live online classes where they can ask questions, collaborate with classmates, and engage in discussions with their teachers. Beyond the virtual classroom, students also have opportunities to join clubs, attend outings, participate in school events, and build friendships with peers across Pennsylvania.

6. What curriculum does PA Virtual use?

PA Virtual offers a comprehensive curriculum aligned with Pennsylvania academic standards. Students study core subjects including English Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, while also taking courses in art, music, health, physical education, world languages, career exploration, and electives at the appropriate grade levels.

7. How are students supported if they need extra help?

Every student learns differently. PA Virtual teachers provide individualized support through office hours, one-on-one assistance, small-group instruction, and regular communication with families. Additional academic and student support services are also available to help students meet their goals.

8. Can my child participate in extracurricular activities?

Yes! PA Virtual offers a wide variety of student clubs, organizations, leadership opportunities, and social events throughout the school year. Students can explore new interests, develop leadership skills, and connect with classmates outside of their regular classes.

Additionally, under Pennsylvania law, PA Virtual students may also be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities, athletics, and other approved programs offered by their local school district, giving them even more opportunities to stay involved in their community.

9. How flexible is the school day?

PA Virtual offers a balance of synchronous (live, teacher-led) and asynchronous (self-paced) learning. Students attend scheduled live classes where they interact with teachers and classmates, then complete independent assignments on their own time. This combination provides structure while giving families greater flexibility than many traditional school settings. Learning from home also eliminates daily commuting, making it easier for students to balance school with extracurricular activities, appointments, and other commitments.

10. How do I enroll?

The enrollment process is designed to be simple and supportive. Our Admissions team is available to answer questions, explain eligibility requirements, and guide families through each step, from submitting an application to preparing for the first day of school.
