Many families wonder whether choosing a cyber school like PA Virtual limits a student’s ability to participate in sports. The good news is: it doesn’t! PA Virtual students have a wide range of opportunities to stay active, compete, and enjoy athletics while thriving academically. Hear from our Physical Education teacher, Stephen Scholl, on how you can still participate in sports while attending a cyber school.
Sports Opportunities for PA Virtual Students
Students enrolled at PA Virtual can participate in any extracurricular programs, including sports, offered by their local school district. Many of our students successfully play for their local school teams while enjoying the flexibility of a virtual learning environment.
In addition, students can join community or club sports programs, including travel teams, recreational leagues, gymnastics, dance, swimming, or weightlifting. The flexibility of PA Virtual’s schedule allows students to fully engage in activities they enjoy, even those that require traveling. Simply put, students have the freedom to choose the sports and activities that best fit their interests.
Balancing Sports and Cyber School
One of the biggest advantages of PA Virtual for student-athletes is our flexible schedule. Students can plan their schoolwork around games, practices, and competitions. Classes and assignments can often be completed at different times of the day, allowing students to work ahead before busy sports days or catch up afterward.
To help balance academics and athletics, we recommend that students:
-
- Create a consistent routine that works for them, whether classes are synchronous or asynchronous.
-
- Stay in contact with teachers, who are always available to provide support.
This approach helps students not only manage their time effectively but also develop important life skills like responsibility and time management—beneficial both on the field and in the classroom.
Physical Education at PA Virtual
PA Virtual offers a goal-based PE program designed to meet each student’s abilities and interests. Students set a Class Fitness Goal during the first week and track weekly progress through a Fitness Log.
Students can choose exercises that suit them, from standard workouts to activities they already enjoy through sports. Even those new to physical activity can access a wide range of resources and exercises requiring little or no equipment. Our PE program encourages students to set both short-term and long-term goals, fostering a sustainable and enjoyable active lifestyle.
We emphasize that staying active should be fun. Students often discover new activities they enjoy through PE, from yoga and walking to strength training and fitness classes. Many become motivated by tracking their progress and achieving personal milestones, creating a sense of accomplishment and confidence.
Success Stories
Our students consistently excel in sports while attending PA Virtual. Some compete nationally in individual sports like boxing, ice skating, and gymnastics, while others participate in competitive local or travel teams such as soccer, volleyball, and ice hockey.
PE classes at PA Virtual complement students’ athletic pursuits by allowing them to set sport-specific goals, whether focused on improving personal performance or achieving specific accomplishments. This partnership helps many students improve in their craft and succeed both academically and athletically.
Why Cyber School Works for Student-Athletes
Cyber school is ideal for student-athletes because it allows them to schedule academics around athletics, rather than the other way around. Students can maintain rigorous training schedules, travel for competitions, and fully engage in their local sports programs while keeping their academics on track.
At PA Virtual, students can enjoy the best of both worlds: academic flexibility and robust opportunities to stay active, competitive, and engaged in the sports they love.
