In today’s technology-driven society, educators in the virtual classroom are making strides to connect students with both their school community and learning experience. In this fast-paced world, it is important for young learners to make purposeful connections both inside and outside of the classroom. It is even more important for students in a virtual setting to establish connections within their community, namely the community within their school setting.

It is a popular misconception that students cannot make meaningful connections in their virtual classroom or build real relationships online. Some also mistakenly believe that a virtual classroom cannot cultivate a sense of belonging or that teachers cannot connect personally with students. At PA Virtual Charter School, students have the opportunity to connect with teachers and peers while forming strong community ties that allow them to grow and thrive in their educational experiences. Let’s explore how PA Virtual teachers and staff create this connection within the school community and beyond, and how community is at the heart of PA Virtual’s mission.

The Power of Relationships in Education

PA Virtual students are able to experience and build meaningful relationships within their classroom experience and school community. Community is an integral part of education that helps facilitate student engagement and success. Building strong relationships in education matters deeply to PA Virtual educators, allowing students to be successful not only academically but also to grow emotionally and socially. The academic impact of strong school communities allows students to thrive and create a sense of belonging. When students feel the positive effects of this strong community base, it opens the door for increased motivation, confidence, and overall well-being.

Creating Engaging and Supportive Learning Environments

PA Virtual’s dedicated teachers and staff actively encourage communication, collaboration, and community building to provide the best learning experience for all students. Certified teachers facilitate live and engaging classes. Students have the option to take both synchronous (live) and asynchronous (independent study) classes, allowing them to have real-time interaction with teachers, whether in a live classroom or during designated meeting times.

Teachers at PA Virtual offer regular feedback and support to guide students through the learning process, continuing to build connections and confidence. Student achievements and milestones are celebrated, and every student is supported to ensure success. Support systems, like Academic Support teachers, Guidance Counselors, and Student Assistance Programs, provide the resources and assistance needed. Teachers at PAVCS have many supports in place to help promote a strong connection between students and teachers.

Interactive Learning That Fosters Connection

PA Virtual teachers and staff create lessons that are interactive, using classroom chat, polls, breakout rooms, live discussions and discussion boards, whiteboards, and other learning tools. If you visit a class, you will see how collaboration thrives virtually. Whether a reflection board is running in Padlet or a discussion board is rapidly filling with responses in Nearpod, students have the opportunity to work together in real time from anywhere.

This interactive approach promotes student engagement, helping students become active learners rather than passive participants. At PA Virtual, teachers set a positive tone with a welcoming digital space. Each virtual classroom has a dedicated area that provides opportunities to connect through discussion threads or real-time chat. Students can also use collaborative documents to work on group projects. When a student is engaged in the learning process, great things happen, including higher levels of attention, interest, and motivation to succeed. An engaged, community-centered school builds confidence and fosters positive relationships.

Peer-to-Peer Connections and Student Clubs

At PA Virtual, students have the opportunity to build peer-to-peer relationships within the school community. In the classroom, students work together on interactive group projects and collaborative assignments, further fostering connectedness in the virtual school setting. Meaningful peer connections happen regularly at PA Virtual.

The English Honor Society runs a Reading Buddies program within the elementary school. Many of our student clubs provide organic opportunities for peer support and collaboration. Outside of the classroom, students can join the school’s 30+ clubs, honor societies, and Student Government. Opportunities include clubs such as Peace of Mind, Mental Health Awareness Club, Scoliosis Support Group, Student Council, BLAST (Building Leaders and Strong Teens), Peer Leadership, Young Muslim Club, and multiple honor societies. Students can meet in these virtual spaces to connect, engage socially, and feel a sense of belonging with peers who share similar interests.

Family and Community Engagement

Families, learning coaches, and parents play an important role in creating connections in the virtual setting. At PA Virtual, each student has a Learning Coach (typically a parent or guardian) who works closely with both students and their teachers. This relationship between the student, teacher, and learning coach helps maintain transparent communication and support within the virtual learning community.

Students and their families have the opportunity to engage not only virtually but also in person at social outings. These engagement opportunities include school-wide outings, field trips (both virtual and in-person), chats, info sessions, and school-wide events. Family Support Coordinators at PA Virtual organize monthly events such as outings, field trips, and other community-based activities across the state of Pennsylvania. From a trip to Unangst Pumpkin Farm to a virtual visit to the Super Spooky Science Lab, students and their families can connect with one another. These events are a great way for students and their families to socialize, meet, and form relationships. Parents and learning coaches have access to the support networks and resources needed to help their students grow in the virtual classroom and community.
