We’ve all said it before. “Can you put that in layman's terms?” Well, what if we started asking for detailed information in “6th grade terms?”  I’m Amy Dajczak, a 6th grade Academic Support teacher at PA Virtual Charter School.  Qualifying students receive Academic Support in Math and English Language Arts. This program provides students with targeted support in key standards to strengthen their skills in the subject area.

Screenshot 2024-08-02 132247The transition to a cyber school can be a lot.  In my Academic Support classroom, a team of 6th graders worked together to brainstorm key components of their day to share with you. Keep in mind that they worked hard collaboratively to create this for everyone, people inside and outside our school. As it provides a nice glimpse into what they do on a day to day basis.

They applied these details while reviewing the writing process, and practicing peer editing strategies.  Their hard work and careful planning led to the following window into their day.  I encourage you, and your student, to peruse this information as you start your cyber journey.

PA Virtual Charter School is a great school because we learn important stuff from nice teachers while using technology. An important part of the day is getting up every morning and logging onto Blackboard. It is also important to join the classes. It wouldn't be school without the classes. Some of the classes are Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, PE, Art and music. During class you have to participate and complete your assignments. You should work in a quiet space to help you concentrate.  You need to prepare for your day because you want to be up and be alert for school.

I start my day by splashing water in my face to wake me up.  Next, I play music or watch a video before logging into class. I make sure I have my supplies ready and my laptop is charged. Before class starts, you have to check your email. If your teacher is out and you just go to class and nobody is there that means she is maybe talking to a student or she is out. If you are not going to school for the day, contact your FSC and teacher’s so that you can be marked absent. At the beginning of the day you need a calculator, notebook and pencil. If you don’t have a notebook and pencil you might miss writing down a step.

The classes I have are History, Science, Applied, Math, English, and Academic Support. During class you can use your mic to tell your  teacher and class an answer. You can also use a mic and chat box to talk. I like to chat with my teacher when they are finished teaching or working with a student. This sometimes happens in a breakout room. The programs we use during class are Jigsaw, Nearpod, and IXL. My teacher will ask me to answer questions in the chatbox, the poll or on a whiteboard.

There are also chances for me to learn my own way and socialize. On Fridays, I finish any work I have not done yet, and I check on any work I got low scores on and work that will need to be done soon. My teachers are available to meet during office hours.  PE, music and art projects are completed on Fridays too.  On Fridays I can attend an outing.  Some outings include picnics, museum tours, service opportunities and even the Renaissance Faire.  I see my teachers at Friday outings, students from my classes,  and other students who go to Pa Virtual school.

There is a lot of communication with teachers. If you are confused about something in class you  can send your teacher a private chat or raise your hand. You can talk to your teachers by emailing them or sending them private chats. You can meet with your teacher if you need help with something. You can go to their office hours or schedule a time.  During my study hall I can study for tests, complete homework and catch up on missing work. This is also a good time to check and answer my emails.

In conclusion, I enjoy PAVCS.  This is a fun school, there are outings to go to, and you won't get sick often. When I’m learning, I use interactive programs such as Sapphire, IXL, Blackboard, iReady, and Jigsaw. All the teachers work very hard to make this school fun yet effective, so yea, they are all great teachers. If your kid is looking for a fun and effective way to learn stuff then I say… heck yeah, join PA Virtual Charter School!
