As we approach the end of the school year, it gets harder and harder for kids to stay focused on their school work. With the weather getting warmer, the days getting longer, and summer vacation just around the corner, it naturally becomes more difficult for children to concentrate on school. As a parent, there are some things you can do to help keep your child focused until school lets out for the summer.

Here are 4 tips to help your child stay focused and finish the school year on a strong note:

  1. Stick With Your Routine.

As the days get longer, it may be more difficult for your children to go to sleep at their regularly scheduled bedtime and wake up on time to get ready for the school day. Make sure to keep the same routine going that has been working for your family all year. Keep your dinnertime the same, even if the sun hasn’t gone down yet. Be sure that homework and studying are done at the same time every day, too! These routines remind our children that school is still in session and it’s not summertime quite yet.

  2. Stay Engaged in Your Child’s Education.

Parents, this is a reminder that it’s not summertime for us yet either. Stay involved in your student’s education by keeping in contact with their teachers and ensuring your student isn’t falling behind in their schoolwork. Make sure your child is submitting their assignments on time. At schools like PA Virtual Charter School, parents can log into their parent account 24/7 to view their child’s grades, attendance, and even contact a teacher if necessary. If your child’s school offers this benefit, be sure to take advantage of it to stay in the loop!

  3. Embrace the Countdown.

We all know your kids are counting down the days until summer begins, so why not count down with them? Create a big calendar that counts down the days left until summer break. You can also mark down your plans for the summer, whether it’s summer camp, a trip to an amusement park, or anything else that reminds your children that fun times are ahead!

  4. Get Outside!

According to the EPA, the average American spends 93% of their lives indoors. Take advantage of the warmer weather this spring! Schedule some family time to go to the playground or take a short hike at a nearby park. Getting your daily dose of Vitamin D is a great way to reward your children for a job well done. It’s also a great way to get some fresh air and rejuvenate after a long day of school indoors. You can even designate a day every week to be a “field trip” or “outing” day like PA Virtual plans with their students every Friday, when circumstances allow and it is safe to do so.

We hope these tips will help make the last days of the school year a successful one for you and your family!
